What is bacteria? According to dictionary.com, the definition is a member of a large group of unicellular microorganisms that have cell walls but lack organelles and an organized nucleus, including some that can cause disease. In 1674, a man by the name of Anton Van Leeuwenhoek first discovered bacteria. Since then, many different scientists have done research bacteria. Every time a scientist looks at bacteria, the first thing they have to find out is what type of bacteria is growing. In order to identify the bacteria, one has to follow these steps. The first step is to look at the shape. After you determine the shape, then you look at its size. Then, you look at it’s elevation. You look at its surface, whether it is smooth, wavy, rough, etc. Then you look at the structure, the edges, and the color. Finally, you need to look and see how fast it grows. That is the process that one needs to follow in order to identify bacteria.
