Today I helped the WISRD Production Team set up filming equipment so that members of the WISRD Shop could be interviewed. Then I went downstairs to Scott’s room to work with Josie on the Symposium workshop. We had a meeting with Scott and Alicia about a survey we want our community to participate it.

February 7th, 2017

I acknowledge that I have let too much time to write another update, but I’ve been busy juggling three different projects. I’m working with the WISRD Production team to create a new video that showcases who we are through student voice and interviews. I’ve also completed making gummy bears with Josie and Aidan. They were distributed to 8th graders in an attempt to recruit new members of WISRD. I have also spent time planning the symposium workshop revolving around gender diversity in STEM with Josie.

January 11th, 2017

The WISRD Instagram has successfully been created. It’s been connected to the Twitter and Facebook account as well. Remy and I created a collage of photos as our first post on Instagram. I’ve email the hydroponics team so that I can get some photos to post on the social media platforms. Because they are in the other class, I won’t be able to film them unless they decide to work during their lunch, when I would be able to film them.

January 4th, 2017

I checked out filming equipment from Laura and was able to interview Josie in Scott’s physics room. I used various camera angles and framing. Then, I uploaded the footage onto my computer and onto iMovie. After replaying the footage, I discovered there was background noise, which I hope I will be able to edit out. Some behind the scene photos were taken and posted on the Twitter account too! I hope to have the video complete by 1/10.

January 3rd, 2017

Today is the first day back from winter break. I’ve asked Laura permission to use a DSLR camera, battery, memory card, and tripod to film a short interview of Josie B. I’m going to ask her about her experience from InnovatedLA. Then overlap it with the sequence of footage I made during my break from the event. I’ve also began reading articles online on the art and science behind visual effects. I’m following my curiosity on this particular topic to see what new projects it might inspire.

Today, I’ve finally begun to edit the footage that Aidan took of InnovatedLA. After speaking with Dylan, I’ve decided to make a short 2 minute film that showcases activities from InnovatedLA. I plan to do a voice over of another WISRD student talking about their experience from the event.

December 13th, 2016

Half the gummy bear recipe was made to test the silicone molds for the first time. We sprayed the mold with canola baking spray to prevent the raspberry flavored gelatin from sticking to it. Although we had previously tested the recipe, for some unknown reason the gelatin overflowed in the microwave and spilled all over. Despite this, however, there was enough of the gelatin mix to fill all of the molds. After the gelatin set in the molds, the gummy bears were really easy to take out. The gummy bears themselves received positive feedback from people who tasted them. They were a bit sticky, but not as much as the first time, so I think that the canola baking spray helped with the level of stickiness. Next time, we plan to use cornstarch.

I added a description and the link to the promotional video on the Media page. I tried to get the footage from InnovetED.LA from Aidan, but I couldn’t because I don’t have dropbox on my computer. Now I am in the process of downloading dropbox onto my computer so that I can access the footage.

Josie, Aidan, and I tested a gummy bear recipe using flavored and non-flavored gelatin. The product was tasty, however had a very sticky residue. Our next steps are to create a silicon mold with the WISRD logo on it. We also plan to use cornstarch in the recipe to get rid of the stickiness.

With the help of Joe, I was able to recognize that the Social Media Outreach Program has taught me a new life skill: accountability. I made many efforts by emailing and reaching out to faculty and WISRD members. Nonetheless, the lack of response made it difficult to make significant progress in the project. Although I’ve made an effort, I haven’t produced anything, which means I’ve failed to meet my goal. I had justifying this failure with my efforts, but have learned that I am still accountable for not producing any new results.

This lesson has caused me to re-evaluate what I am doing. Since the beginning, my objective for this social media program has been to help WISRD succeed in its promise to inform the community on developments in A-STEM. However, as I assess my work, I realize I need a new and different approach/strategy to do so. For example, what if I find a way to connect with the editors for the WISRD magazine? How can the social media group and editors collaborate to support one another? A new idea: the social media group could promote the magazine on social media platforms, and the magazine can incorporate an article on what the Social Media Outreach Program is doing. I plan to further discuss this with the chief editor of the magazine, Josie B.

November 2nd, 2016

The deadline for the final video is this Friday, yet I failed to ask the art department permission to check out filming equipment. Therefore, no filming could be done today. I tried to schedule a time to film tomorrow, Thursday 11/3/16, but no one seems to be available (including me).  Due to these complications in logistics, I’m not optimistic about the possibility that the new video will be done in two days. Ergo, I think I will submit the existing video.

I read Exploring Learning: The Institute Model as a New Path to Meaningful Discovery written by J. A. Wise to prepare interviewing members of WISRD. In order to receive a range of voices, I plan to interview Dylan, Felix, Josie, and Lexi.

In preparation for InnovatedLA this Saturday, October 15th, 2016, I helped Will organize the computers and monitors. We connected, reconnected, and disconnected wires and cables to clean the WISRD space. The computers were shifted into a slightly new location and plugged in. They will be ready for the event this weekend.

September 14th, 2016

Will and I have made good progress in our first promotional video for WISRD. We’ve captured students working on their learning outcomes and plan to interview a few of them for the video. Our goal is to finish the production and the post production process by the end of next week. If we achieve our goal, the first video of the year will be published on YouTube by next week.

September 13th, 2016

Scott introduced Miana and I to Capstone, a software for data collection and analysis. I downloaded it onto my personal Mac computer and familiarized myself with it. Miana and I built an apparatus with a pendulum. We used a motion sensor to observe the relationship between time and the position of the pendulum. Utilizing Capstone, I was able to easily collect data and create a graph.

August 30th, 2016

I participated in the board’s meeting and stepped into leadership positions for three projects. The first project is to design a logo for WISRD. I spoke to Alton, who teaches a graphic design elective at Wildwood School, and have agreed to involve his class in the process. I will continue to collaborate with him and his class to create the logo. The second project revolves around managing and organizing WISRD Wednesdays and all school meeting announcements for lunch lectures. Although both projects are important and valuable, I have to admit that I am mostly excited about the last project, which is to develop WISRD’s YouTube channel. Will and I presented our proposal to the board members. We received feedback, which Will and I will use to move our project forward.
