MasterpieceVR is turning out to be extremely beneficial to the progression of the AR/VR team and weather balloon. So far we have made an OBJ of the weather balloon, as well as test printed a cube made in MasterpieceVR. Currently, we are working on etching out a circuit board.

12/6/17

We now have MasterpieceVR on Gruntilda using the WISRD steam account. Oculus has been acting strangely though, the software is not recognizing the HDMI output. This is restricting our ability to use MasterpieceVR in VR. Currently we are working to resolve this issue. The cancer cell status however has been frustrating. The team has posted on subreddits and forums to seek advice on the GearVR problems.

11/17/17

Currently the VR/AR group has many project in progress. Jojo and I are working on image recognition with Vuforia, and object habitation in a real space using AR. The next step in poster recognition is allowing the camera to recognize multiple images at once and what we will put in the poster after the image is recognized. The next step for adding objects in AR is how we can manipulate the objects in C#.

For the past two WISRD sessions I have been writing code and creating trigger boxes for the cells. So far I have been able to place the trigger boxes in the correct position and have gotten the first grouping of cells to move towards the end of the vein at varying speeds. The trouble now is that once the first grouping of cells reaches the first trigger box it suddenly stops instead of moving vertically towards the next trigger box.

We have been gathering textures from the theater to put in our virtual model. Everything is coming along perfectly. We will be using the prefab from our previous gallery project to save time. Now that we have Remy in the other class working on the same scene as us we have double the work time to finish the project. We are using the video player component for textures to display the performances.

9/12/17

We have started production on the virtualization of the Wildwood Theater. As of now we have created a very basic model of the space in Unity and have started applying textures. This week we are planning to start a movement script for the player designed for oculus and will be looking at other platforms of iOS or Android at a later date. On friday of this week I will be attending a meeting in a VR space discussing the furture of VR/AR in education using engage and WISRD’s involvement.

9/5/17

We have had issues with Engage, with their software being unable to import custom assets so we are looking to MasterpieceVR for the design of the balloon. As for the cancer cell, we will be sticking with Engage since we will create a custom room by the design of a cancer cell so the user can explore the cell and view moving parts. We will create the room in Unity, with moving parts, such as the blood stream. The final product will allow the user to walk, or teleport around the cell by their choice, explore the room and descriptions of the cell. Throughout this process, Jojo has been contributing to the design of the procedure and is now part of the VR team.

9/1/17

I am using a program called Engage for a lobby room for the design of the balloon. The room will allow multiple people to meet in a VR space and change the dimensions of the X, Y and Z axis. We are now working on finding the correct format so we can upload our own custom models into the system.

4/14/17

I am now working with Simone on the HoloLens project. She is teaching me Unity by showing me concepts such as movement scripts, collisions, environment design, and textures. She is also teaching me C# to prepare me for next year in WISRD.

We worked with the 3D printing group(Grace and Lea) to fix the model by adjusting its positioning on the platform of the printer. As of now we have the peg, the hub, and one anemometer cup with two more to print along with the support. We ordered the M8 bearing and we are now waiting arrival.

3/15/17

There was an issue with the 3D printer printing the cups for the anemometer so we are re-printing that today. This time we are only printing one cup at a time to avoid any mess ups due to larger prints. If the issue was due to the design of the print I will work with Grace to make sure that the model will be able to print.

3/14/17

We found a printable anemometer on thingiverse and took measurements to make sure that the model did not need to be altered to fit inside the tunnel. I made a few edits to the support to hold the motor in place. Today I soldered the wires for the motor to make sure they were more secure.

3/7/17

As of today the fans are up and running. The propellers shipped in on Thursday 3/2 and we had access to attach them today. Our next move forward is to build an anemometer inside the wind tunnel and have a readout on an LCD panel. We will 3D print the anemometer and use a DC electric motor to get an output. We will take that output and run it through an equation to find the windspeed which will be displayed in real time on the LCD panel.

When joining WISRD, I had hoped to strengthen my ability to code, practice circuitry, and work with Arduino and the Arduino group. To take action I have widened my knowledge in the Arduino capabilities and utilized them to benefit the WISRD community. The code behind the Arduino that we used to program the fans for the wind tunnel works by reading a value that the potentiometer outputs and then depending on that value, sends a signal to the four motors telling them to speed up or slow down. In the future, I will explore more with the Arduino and what we can do to expand the capabilities of the wind tunnel as well as explore the concept of air as a fluid.

3/1/17

We have set up the wind tunnel with the frame attached. Tomorrow, Thursday 3/2, the 1045 propellers required will arrive if on schedule and we can do a full test with all four propellers. Looking forward we will use the ethernet shields to provide mobile control of the wind tunnel.

Arduino Group Future Work and Plan:

We will be using a wind speed meter to test the design of our propellers and if we need to remodel them. If needed, we can use a stacking method to reach the wind speed required. We have printed two versions of the small propellers. One of them using rafters and the other using dissolvable filament as support.

We have used the Ultimaker printer for the first print because the lulzbot printer did not print all the way. We used the Ultimaker for the first two prints and then used the makerbot printer to print with dissolvable filament.

1/24/17

We are using the LulzBot Taz 6 printer for the first print of the propeller. The settings that we are using are:

Quality

Layer Height : 0.25mm

Shell Thickness : 1.0mm

Fill

Bottom/Top thickness : 1.0mm

Fill Density : 75%

Perimeters before infill : Yes

Speed and Temperature

Print Speed (mm/s) : 50

Printing Temperature (C): 230

Bed Temperature (C) : 85

Support

Support Type : Everywhere

Platform Adhesion Type : Raft

Filament

Diameter (mm) : 2.89

Flow (%) : 100.0
This will be our first print to ensure that the model does not need to be altered.

Coming back from winter break, the Arduino group has finished the fan system for the wind tunnel project and only requires fans and machine screws to provide a fully functioning system. This upcoming semester, the Arduino group is working to utilize Cayenne in with the Arduino. An upcoming challenge with Arduino is providing the propellers for the   motors because we are deciding wether or not to 3D print the necessary requirements. We would work with Lea and Grace to 3D print the 4 required props if we choose to 3D print the fans.

12/5/16

The assembly of the frame is near completion. All boards are cut and awaiting assembly. In Autodesk Circuits, we have finished the digital circuit to work for a 4 motor system. The virtual circuit and code is now being adjusted to be able to work with other accessories such as an LCD panel to display resistance. These are images of the circuit made in Autodesk Circuits.

We are making progress with Arduino because we are collaborating with the aerodynamics lab to build them a fan system that will be adjustable and help them collect data. So far Cameron and I have made progress in the design of the frame to fit over the straws on the wind tunnel. We also hope to make the physical setup as customizable as possible so future groups can add on parts that they may need for their experiments. We will also incorporate Cayenne into this progress as well to give the wind tunnel group a digital way to control the fans.

In WISRD I am working on an Arduino project with Simone to be able to program and use the Arduino from a smart phone wirelessly. This project has been put on hold because the ethernet shield shippment has been delayed. Until we have the necessary equipment for the Arduino project, I have been working on refreshing my memory in JavaScript for the upcoming hackathon. I have restarted my course in JavaScript in the online program code academy. With my free time I have also been developing my HTML and CSS skills. When I am not working on code, I have been practicing circuitry and familiarizing myself with tools such as transistors, potentiometers, and breadboards.

This image is an LED light that I had programed the Arduino to blink SOS in morse code. I did this to practice with the Arduino and the Arduino scripting platform. The link below is the Arduino running the program.
